What Your First Real Place Is Missing

Five small changes that make a place feel lived in.

You signed the lease, or the mortgage. The boxes are mostly unpacked. There is a couch, a TV, a bed, and a table you eat at sometimes. And the place still feels like somewhere you are staying instead of somewhere you live.

That is common in a first real place, especially one set up fast. After a new job, a move across the country, or a divorce, the goal is to get functional: bed, chair, coffee maker, done. Function gets you through the first month, but it rarely makes the room feel like yours.

Here is what is usually missing. None of it is a big purchase.

1. Warm light

Most apartments and new builds come with one overhead light per room, and it is harsh. Turn it off after dark. Put a lamp in a corner, or two. Low, warm light at eye level makes a room feel closer in a good way, and it is the fastest change you can make tonight.

2. Something on the walls

Bare walls tell anyone who walks in that nobody has decided to stay yet. You do not need a gallery wall. One piece of art you like, hung at eye level where you sit most, changes the whole room. Pick something with a point of view over the beige print that came with the frame.

3. One soft thing per room

Hard surfaces echo. A rug, a throw on the couch, a real pillow on the chair. Texture is what makes a guest sit back instead of perching on the edge, and it is what keeps you on the couch for one more episode.

4. Your things, out where they can be seen

The watch your father gave you. Your records. The books you have read. Put a few of them out. A home should tell someone a little about who lives there.

5. A spot set up for the people who come over

If your kids stay on weekends, or a friend crashes after the game, give them a place that was planned for them: an extra blanket, a lamp by the couch, a clear surface for their things. People notice when you thought about them before they arrived.

Start with one room

Pick the room you spend the most time in. Fix the light, hang one piece, add one soft thing. Live with it for a week before you buy anything else, and you will know what comes next.

If the couch needs its soft thing, our sherpa blanket is 60 by 80 inches, sherpa on one side and original art printed on the other, made to order for you. Free shipping always included. See the blankets.
